“Wind-Jeannie” and “Hail-Jeannie” are real-time loss forecasting tools that provide a first indication of the impact of windstorm and hail events. The service is available exclusively through the PERILS Platform to data-providing companies and subscribers to the PERILS Industry Exposure & Loss Database.
Wind-Jeannie and Hail-Jeannie are designed to help insurance companies manage large windstorm and hail events by providing real-time estimates on the expected loss magnitude and geographical extent of an ongoing event. The tools deliver insured property and motor market loss forecasts for wind and hail events across Australia, Canada, Europe and Japan. Loss forecasts are generated in real time using weather data from the Australian Bureau of Meteorology (BOM), the German Weather Service (DWD), and by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF). Loss estimates are updated every 12 hours, and detailed loss and hazard footprints can be viewed and downloaded for varying time windows.
It is important to note that forecast reliability improves as more time passes since the peak of an event. Even then, loss estimates remain subject to considerable uncertainty. As the Danish physicist Niels Bohr famously remarked, “Forecasts are difficult, especially those concerning the future.” This observation is particularly relevant to real-time catastrophe loss forecasting. Consequently, forecasted losses should not be taken at face value, as actual losses may differ substantially from the estimates provided.
Wind-Jeannie is available for the following countries: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom. Hail-Jeannie is available for the following countries: Australia, and more to come soon.
